Grober Unfug live 1982

Another small show of Grober Unfug in their home turf - a local youth center.

Bad luck that we do not have more pictures like this - thanks to Pizza for being one of the only carrying a camera with him! A couple of more great picture from 1982 have surfaced now with Mr. Proof - follow this link!

Rotten snear

Picture 3: Biber (Knallschoten) and Toni (Grober Unfug) at the Milkshakes show at the infamouse Chicago Club on St. Pauli, ca. 1982

The Milkshakes were a R/B & PunkBeat follow up of the legendary Pop Rivets who took Hamburg by storm in 1979, being one of the first small punk bands from the UK coming over to Hamburg. They played the small clubs up&down, esp. the Krawall 2000. Their LP is still a real gem! This Milkshakes show was at the Chicago Club, a ill-fated club run by local red-light hero "Negerkalle" Schwensen who tried to cash in on music clubs besides other business ("Taking care of business" was imprinted on his business card).

Channel Rats 1982

Picture 4: Channel Rats, first ever promo picture, for WEIRD-Systems HH-Sampler (Beyer, Pizza, Bodo, Stickel)

The Channel Rats formed in 1982 out of some punks around the Funzine Fanzine & Die Knallschoten. Knallschoten Drummer Pizza filled in on drums with the Channel Rats also and Bodo, Beyer and Stickel joined. Above picture was taken in the famous rehearsal space located at Lutherotstrasse Youth Center deep down under the high towers of the Lutherotstrasse Siedlung. A lot of other bands practised there, including Nimm 2, ABC-Schützen (on one occasion with Rod of later later later Die Ärzte fame!) and anyone else who needed a place. It was also a great hang-out. You can spot "Stickel mach Pogo" on the wall behind Stickel, a graffiti by Minus (of Funzine and later Minusrekord fame) who did write stupid stuff all over the room (see inlay of the Channel Rats / R.A.F. Gier Split LP on Konnecken in 1985).

Being a Punk in Darmstadt is rather hard, isn't it?

Picture 5: Thomas Koch, Sylvia, Erol somewhere in Darmstadt

Thomas Koch then still looked like the honest, true, 100% punk - see 1984 how is appearence changed. And see him today! No, just kidding Thomas! I think this was some promo-pic for the Darmstadt-fanzine scene. Erol went on to play in some strange OI-bands, like Stromberg  Polka (with a great 7" on their own lable). Sylvie is unkown. Thomas Koch will follow up the stories of "Punks in Darmstadt" on these pages - maybe.

... say cheese!

Picture 6: Rudi K. at Unterm Durchschnitt Record Shop (ex-Konneckschen)

"This was in 1982 were i was unemployed after i decided that the education as gardener was not the real thing for me. So with full free time i worked at the counter of "Unterm   Durchschnitt" thus enabling Uli Rehberg & Mansur Nicknam (then the co- owner) to hide away from all the punks who wanted to hear but seldom buy a record. I was 18 and proud of the red-metalic hair and life went on when i started the education as a baker just when the army tried to draft me..." (Rudi K.)

Volle Dröhnung - Platzangst, Versuchsfeld ca. 1982Jason (Platzangst) at homestreet "Spannskamp", ca. 1982

Picture 7: Platzangst, Versuchsfeld ca. 1982, opening for UK Decay (Scholle (git), Boffer (dr), Frankie (voc))   Picture 8: Jason (b) at "Spannskamp", ca. 1982

This is the famous Boffer (now playing headcoach of FC St. Pauli 5. Herren) on drums! More to follow shortly . Platzangst were a great band that developed into a real cool power pop punk band. They called it a day in the middle of the 80ies and left 2 great songs on Mansur Nicknams "WATERKANT HITS" - from wich "An der Waterkant" is one of our all time fave punk songs about our beautifull hometown of Hamburg. Guitarist Scholle went on to play for a lot of local bands, last for Bronx Boys. Bassman Jason went on to play with Public Enemy 23, Rubbermaids and now is in Weltniveau. Singer Frankie now lives in Portugal as a farmer. All came from Hamburg-Stellingen, a street called "Spannskamp" (see lyrics of "An der Waterkant"). The show actualy was "a bit out of lucky" (Loddar Matthaeus) as their equipment was stolen between soundcheck and the show (they got hold of the punk who tried to rip them of later) and they - in allready full drunkness - had to convince UK Decay to allow them to use the headliners amps and backline. Ever done that, punk?

Platzangst, Fabrik 1982

Picture 9: Platzangst at the "Gegen Gewalt gegen Punks" Festival at Fabrik, 1982 (Jason (b), Boffer (v), Scholle (g))

Another great "Vollsuff für alle" (Drunkness for all) show by Platzangst with Boffer singing prior to moving to drums (see pic 7 on this page). It was a funny show with crying mothers ("my poor punk kid has been hurt by skins/police/teds/else....") and a lot of local bands (can't recall the lineup right now).

Stickel trading future styles Up your's brother!
Picture 10: PunkRockPogoGrillParty at Hardy's parents home (Rudi K. (Funzine/Knallschoten), Stickel (w/ Helmet, Channel Rats), Volli (Holy War Fanzine / HH-Milch), Pizza (Funzine/Knallschoten) Picture 11: PunkRockPogoGrillParty at Hardy's parents home (Biber (Funzine/Knallschoten), Volli (Holy War Fanzine / HH-Milch), Pepe (HH-Milch), Stickel (Channel Rats),Pizza (Funzine/Knallschoten)

This was another great outdoor event: Those days most people still lived at home and once parents were absent it was time for a real Punk Rock Pogo Party - this time at Hardy's parents home in HH-Billstedt. Besides drunkness and loud music this evening was remebered as the day Stickel (normaly the first in full drunkness) was covered with empty beer-cans and other stuff:

Stickel mach Pogo!

Picture 12 : Stickel rules!

It later went full crazy when some started to write band names on his (white) addidias sport shoes and gave him a Hitler beard and and and!

Punk over Harburg!

Picture 13 : The ticket from legendary DK show in Harburg, 06.12.1982

Picture 14/15 : Beyer (Channel Rats) and Stauber (Platzangst) at a party.

Beyer at a party drinking rat piss (Hansa Pils). That was the cheapest beer available at that time and therefore the standard drink of the day. And, hey Stauber, not sitting down while wrenching the noodle? Oh my, those where lucky days, eh?

Picture 16 : Stauber and Scholle ( both Platzangst) at an outdoor barbQ.

Stauber + Scholle (both Platzangst) , having a barbecue session somewhere in Hamburg-Stellingen. Scholle later went on to play in lot of bands but was famed in the early days of endless guitar tuning - on stage. You gotta be perfect punk, eh?

Picture 17 : Anni and Stauber (Party at Manu's flat in the Karoviertel)

Picture 18/19 : Kotzbrocken Open Air Show, Karoviertel (Rudolf, Arne, Votzer)

Picture 20: Punks on the street - you can see Votzer (snotty) and Meng (in the back).

Picture 21: Willi (backside, soon to be infamous), Jens (Platzangst)

All the above pictures are assumed to be from an open air show in the Karoviertel. But memory has faded away so much that we actualy need some supporting evidence. Anyone out there who cann fill us in?

Picture 22: Stauber (Platzangst), drinking on a sea trip.

Picture 23: Platzangst - one of the most lively pictures of the early days (Stauber, Boffer)

This might be the most energetic Platzangst-bandphoto ever ! Punk fucking hell ! These photos are really bringing it back ! Even the terrible quality of this photo fits like a five knuckle sandwich ! Terroooooooooor !!! This is at the ATH Gymnasium (a local high school in Stellingen) and on this occasion the show was stopped by the police as the school landlord feared for his life...as said: Terror!!!

Picture 24: Posing as a fake band - they have the looks! (Kayan, Goofy, Appen, Tanyu - London 1982)

And here is the story:

"On this one you can see from left to right: Kayan, Goofy, Appen and, eh, myself. It was 1982, back then when we still where using every opportunity to absorb whatever came from England and was labled "Punk". As a gang you where cool but as a band you where even cooler ans so we decided en-route to London to be a band. Kayan had just started to engage with Rudi Krawall into what became the Knallschoten, Goofy did play everywhere and nowhere, Appen was in Nuclear Attack and i had just discovered that PSP, with Kayan and Schorsch (then Teselen, later Kamerun of Goldene Zitronen), did not work out and as such started Naive, where did play this Glam-Dools punk.

To make the story short: There was never a band but for the tommies we were good enough and did have enough street credibility to be taken out for a photo shot (maybe it is due the fact that they knew me as editor of the Colt45 Fanzine and thus gave us credit). What i realy do not know is how this ended up on the cover of "Punk Rock Rarities Vol. 1" as we had no connection whatsoever to one of the bands. Funny, but we will never know - maybe they just wanted to be kind so that we can show this to our kids? If i recall correctly Goofy got his stud-belt taken by some nasty punks - only to discover the belt later on the cover of "Punk and Disorderly", proudly worn by one of the assholes.

And, also worth to mention, any of the 4 could have played with any of the other in a real band - one way or the other. Viva La Rock! Last but not least: You need to check out the badges: Siouxsi, Discharge, Nips, Patrik Fitzgerald, Sex Pistols - that is a nice mix, it would have never worked out between us from this point of view as also the color of our hair would have destroyed it: Red, Blond, White and Irky-green... ah, those where the days!" (Tanyu).

Picture 26: Knallschoten (Biber, Kajan, Rudi, Pizza - @ Grafitti w/ Napalm and Insane - see Tape section)

"25 years down the road and i am being asked to write down how this Insane show in Hamburg was. I can not recall from where i knew of the show but i did. It might have been from the band directly, as i had for quite some time mail (and that was snail mail back then kiddies) contact with Barry, their singer. Worth to note that i lived in Klausdorf, a suburb of Kiel, some 110 km north of Hamburg.

I managed to pursuade a friend, Achim Döring, to take the ride down to Hamburg. Achim was a few years older and had just finished his apprenticeship and, more importantly, owned a 80ccm motorbike. Just the right beast to go down to Hamburg, allthough there was not much drinking on the drive. It took us 90 minutes and quite some seeking in the suburbs of Hamburg-Sasel to find the Graffiti.

First on where Knallschoten, i just can not recall if i knew of them befor but somewhere later i traded a tape with Pizza, their drummer. What i do recall is that i did like them and the Hamburg punks in the audience did cheer them big time. Next on where Napalm and they realy did strike me - i think i did buy their brand new single "It's a warning" on that evening and for me this is an all time classic. They did get the crowd full moving and played all their hit's twice. It is a pitty that i can not recall the setlist after 25 years ...

Finaly Insane where on, who had just released their "Why die" single and promoted it on this mini-tour. Particular highlights from the show where "El Salvador" and "Chinese Rocks" and the crowd realy went bezerk. Just as the show was done we managed to make contact with some local punks and one of them, Sven Thorman, did actualy take us home to his parents house around the corner (and that was a posh suburban home). We did listen to some more music (Cockney Rejects) and he had quite a punk record collection. I realy wonder what happened to the guy and if he still likes punk today (and if he even recals meeting punks from Kiel on that day).

The ride back to Kiel was painfull and we had some problem with the gear (the chain of the bike actualy rather than the gear) but made it home save. Nevertheless i was so thrilled by the Insane show that i did another trip to see them 9 month later when they played the Rock-O-Rama festival at the Stollwerk in Colonge next year. I realy was a fan back then! And realy any show of them was just crackin!" (Kalle Stietzel, Kiel - July 2007)
